As with all real forces within our world, magic must abide by the rules in which our world is comprised. Magic has the potential to do anything; it will never be able to do everything. And even if it could, why would we want it to? The kind of destructive nature magic of that magnitude could have in the wrong hooves would be apocalyptic.

This is why we have hospitals. This is why we still have to grow food. This is why houses take more than a day to build and why death is still a threat.

Fantasy and magic are two different things, but it seems like sometimes ponies forget that.

1) That’s up to you, guy. Only reason anypony ever started following me was because once upon a time somepony decided, “I would not consider it a burden to see what this pony has to say.”

I do what I can to stop it from becoming a burden; this is only my sixth post today and this has been a lot for me. Don’t know what else to say; I don’t think I’ve changed anything.

Sorry my page didn’t turn out to be what you thought it’d be.

3) Magic creates a visible field around what it’s used on. It’d be possible, but you could get caught.

There is such a thing as stealth casting, but that’s well beyond what most are capable of, even if it were legal for civilian use.

1) Shapeshifters aren’t a race; they’re a loose collection of unclassifiable ani-… Can’t even call them animals because some share characteristics closer to other kingdoms or even domains.

It’s not about a species, it’s about power. Shapeshifters don’t have to work for their power; they’re born with it. It’s easy to them. Even Twilight Sparkle or Rainbow Dash had to train for years to reach where they are now, and they’re far from peaked. Shapeshifters just can. Little to learn; requires no more training than walking. There’s nothing to harness, no muscle to build, and once they’ve got it, that’s it. Nothing more to learn, nothing to train, no reason to even practice.

And with this easily gained, already questionable ability… When you have to work for power, there’s at least a chance you might recognize what it was like before hoof and use it responsibly. Shapeshifters have no reason to care. Shifting isn’t even second nature to them. It is their nature. It’s too much power given too fast and too freely.

2) Of course not! What a silly thing to ask!

3) He didn’t shapeshift; he transformed with his reality altering “magic.” Magic in quotations because it isn’t technically magic, the same way five out of the six Elements of Harmony aren’t technically magic.

Shapeshifters are so called because they shift their genetic makeup to an approximation. They don’t literally become what they shift to; if they did they couldn’t turn back. Transforming is literally becoming something else. Unless you’re using time-limited magic or in possession of nigh-unlimited power, it’s permanent. Of course, these are just technical terms.

I don’t even know if Draconequus as a species had as much of, or any of the powers Discord has. They aren’t around anymore, if there ever even was more than one. Lots of rumors surround that.

4) Quick! Everypony become paranoid for the rest of eternity!

Is it any wonder why the public didn’t know about Changlings?

5) Sounds like you’re more of a fan of me than the music.

Don’t have many free days anymore. More of free evenings. Of which I am free this evening.

You’re overgeneralizing things. “Healing magic” is a laymare term that refers to Partial Acceleration and the more recent Mending.

Partial Acceleration is the oldest form of time manipulation magic. It predates antiquity; literally was produced before recorded history. It’s advanced, but one of the most finely tuned branches of any defined school of magic. Using it properly is sort of complicated and requires a lot of preparation before, during, and possibly even weeks after the procedure. But if done properly, there’s no real danger in advancing time on a specific part of your body; the rest of your body will compensate.

However, it will only heal what the body is naturally capable of healing on it’s own. I don’t know what happened to the pegasus that sent that message. If s/he crashed through thick glass and completely mutated their wings, no amount of acceleration is going to heal what the body is incapable of healing by itself.

Mending, on the other hoof, is new. And by new, I mean like a decade old. The ponies that originally presented it as a legitimate branch of manipulation are still alive and continuing research in the field today. It’s incredibly complicated and is technically a form of forced bodily mutation. It’s thus far proved unreliable and long term effects are unknown, but in life-or-death situations mending has done some remarkable things. But last I looked into it there was a possible correlation with producing cancer in the years after the procedure.

All the procedures I’ve had that involved magic were all partial acceleration. And they still left scars.

1) Foals sure do love rhyming inappropriate things. So very mature.

2) Depends on where you are, the style when the bathroom was made or refurnished. Usually things like household income will factor in. Upkeep too.

Maybe you should ask an architect.

3) What are you talking about?

You had an idea for a question. You started writing it out; I follow that far. But past that…

Either way, I’ve never called her Derpy.

4) I think you misunderstood. I don’t care about gardening. I mean, I’ll ask Carrot Top or Apple Jack how their crops are. But that’s because I care about them, not what they yield per se.

But there are unicorn farmers. It’s just… Well, some say direct contact with magic does something to the taste of food. There’s a few unicorns that believe it, but it’s mostly pegasus and earth ponies. I don’t know where to stand on the matter; I’ve never noticed a difference, but I usually levitate food to my mouth.

5) A little. I mean, there’ll be grand festivities, certainly. But it’s not like I know the bride or groom.

6) They travel a lot.

They still see her. They’ll pick her up for a few days in between destinations. They pay for her daily essentials, and the dog too. Nice ponies, but I think they’re having a midlife crisis or something.

7) What have I told you about makin’ stuff up?

image

1) Well, let’s see. Hmm…

I guess I could write about how my boyfriend’s family was nice, but I kinda figured they would be.

So…

2) Yeah?

3) Fine.

4) I can’t really answer that properly. But your average unicorn should always have a healthy, nutritious diet balanced by exercise. There are physical limitations regarding magic use and the last thing you want to do is become physically exhausted when casting. Partially because you’re limiting yourself, and partially because you might mess something up in your fatigue.

5) I wasn’t raised by nuns. I was raised by maids and stewards until I was old enough for school. After that they just made me food if I was around.

I’m pretty sure they didn’t like me. I was just an added workload.

imageimage

1) I wouldn’t.

2) And what relationship guru may I ask is this coming from?

3) ‘Cause fwuffy is wude.

4) Certainly. Magic gets stronger with use just like anything else, to an extent.

General practice when training telekinesis isn’t to lift heavy objects, though. You want to lift and lower multiple small, lighter objects at once. That way you’re training concentration, control, and magical endurance.

And we officially use the Interdimensional System of Units.

5) There are other religions and philosophies on our planet. Not all believe our Princesses to be gods. But without further direction, I don’t know what nuns you’re talking about.

Could you describe when and were you saw them?

6) Right; the primary point of education beyond general basics is to train you in your field of study. As vast as magic is, it can still be pooled together in many areas. On the other hoof, the differences between a blacksmith, a gardener, and a baker are as obvious as night and day.

If it makes you feel any better, anon, I never went to a fancy magic school.

7) I wonder if this will work. Can’t ever tell with those adverts.

8) Do you think maybe that’s your conscience talking? Could it be time for a change maybe? Be nice, help ponies, maybe make some friends?

Not in the sense you’re thinking of.

Going back to a previous answer, earth ponies and pegasus can use minor enchantments like wards placed on objects. They can’t use anything beyond what would be considered “minor” at the technical level. I’m not permitted to explain why, but it’s a physiological constraint.

Now, they could potentially use a magically-infused object, like what you’re talking about, to power a stronger enchantment, which would drain the object in question making it’s usefulness limited. What they can’t do, is directly drain the magically-infused object to spell-cast.

I repeat, there is no way for an earth or pegasus pony to use magic like a unicorn.

But regarding the magically-infused object? Those are even more closely regulated than enchantments themselves. Chances are, if you find somepony with one or trying to sell one, it’s very illegal.

Dude... What if our planet actually rotates around the sun and we've fooled ourselves into believing magic is involved?
Anonymous

Nice try, human, but no pony that doesn’t already know the answer to that would ever think to ask.

Our planet does revolve around our sun, and I heard a long time ago it used to rotate too. But as time went on it slowed down. If nothing was done, eventually it would have tidal locked, like both our and your human Earth’s moon.

What we call the raising and lowering of the sun and moon is really our princess(es) magically grabbing hold of the celestial body in question and using it to flick us into proper rotation. That’s why it doesn’t have to be sustained all day long; it’s just one spell.

1) Uh. Thanks. I don’t use blow dryers, though. They damage your hair.

2) Not a problem. We use bottled water.

3) Ugh… And I’m sure your intention in asking is completely pure

Yeah, but not how you’re thinking. It’s difficult for non-unicorns to understand.

Think of any sensation you feel, but applied to another level of your nervous system. Like how you feel something touching your foreleg or the temperature around you, but while this is happening you also feel something else. That’s what it’s like. And while I know more in depth how it works, I’m not permitted to explain exactly what that something else is. Princess Celestia considers any information about how unicorns use magic to be very hush-hush. There’s always the risk that certain parties, even other unicorns, might try and use that knowledge to produce a negative outcome.

When I chipped my horn as a filly? I still remember that was the most mind-numbingly horrifying pain I’ve ever experienced. And I’ve been through some [omitted], let me tell ya.

Anyway, if you want to ask a more specific question, like the one you actually intended, go ahead.

4) About the same way you would if I told you your life was indirectly influenced by some filly in Manehatten.

5) Nope.

6) I wish.

Most of the sheet music I use when playing the lyre was created for piano. Metal doesn’t translate too well to the piano by itself.

7) Absolutely!

I’d follow the Persona one, but I’ve never played a Persona game. I only played Nocturne, and mostly because it was like Pokemon/Jade Cocoon on extreme mode.

8) Been a while since I’ve got one of these.

Thanks.

Foals

I overheard Pinkie talking about her experiences foal-sitting in the market place, so I decided it might be a good idea if I explained a few things that might seem odd.

It’s not strange for a baby pegasus to fly or a baby unicorn to use magic. At that size a pegasus doesn’t have to generate as much lift to get off the ground. As the pegasus grows it will gain weight and in most cases lose that ability for a while until its wings catch up. Likewise, a baby unicorn can inadvertently cast all manner of spells. Yes, there’s even been reported cases of self levitation and phase walking, which are ordinarily very advanced and very difficult spells to maintain. But they’ll also grow into a stage where they lose that ability. I can’t explain exactly how that works, because how a unicorn uses magic isn’t deemed fit as common knowledge for everypony to know.

In short, there’s nothing strange about a foal flying or tossing around objects with magic. It’s uncommon, but not strange.

I'll be honest, I didn't want to learn magic at first cause it was hard. But then I learned there's a whole multiverse of creatures and other versions of other ponies out there... I want to become great at magic so one day I can explore those places. I want to see with my own eyes the edges of reality, and marvel at its creation without worry something bad might happen!

There’s a certain degree of danger any time somepony strives for power, regardless of the reason.

Not that I believe you’d ever purposefully do anything negative, but that’s the line between intentions and realization.

I was joking around, but just like that it's depressing again. Anyway... so what does... what is it, "casting"? What does casting magic feel like? ~Anon

I try not to dwell on it.

Think of it like a sixth sense, an extension of yourself. It operates on a secondary… hm… I guess frequency? Than your physical body. If you use too much of it, you’ll get dizzy and exhausted like you’ve just run for too long, but it won’t last very long. I guess you could say a unicorn recovers faster from spellcasting than physical activity. It’s why a lot of us use it so much.

To more directly address your question, it just sort of feels like bending your knee, or turning your head. It’s like a muscle.
