Lyra meets Easy Pete and remembers common knowledge that!

You introduce yourself to the old man.

Finding his name strange, the first thing you ask is “Why do they call you ‘Easy Pete’?”
“Was a prospector until I decided to settle here and get away from the NCR. Now I just take it easy and help out with the brahmin and bighorners.”
You are familiar with the term “Prospector”. Prospectors are people who scavenge abandoned pre-war buildings for usable technology and weapons to either sell or use for themselves. “Prospector” itself is a more polite way of referring to scavengers.
You are also aware of the NCR’s notorious imperialist tendencies, trying to make any and all places of use into NCR territory, and very familiar with the heavy taxes it places upon its citizens.
“Do you know anything about the men who attacked me?”
“The one in the fancy suit seemed to be calling the shots. That’s as much as I know. Other folk in town might know more. Word of advice, though: if you ever catch up with him, watch out. The man’s got cold eyes like a snake. Can’t be trusted, I say.”
“What do you know about Victor?”
“The machine? Harmless, no matte what Trudy says. She thinks it’s hiding something, but I think it’s just a broken down relic with no place to be.”
You say goodbye to him, not having much else to ask him.
“Keep your gun handy if you go poking around abandoned places here, like the schoolhouse. Critters move in there sometimes.”
